Roxane Métayer live 2023/10/9 in Kurashiki (Desert time Kurashiki)

It was so wonderful live that I will try to write about it without losing my excitement.

I first heard of her on her album "Perlée de sève" released this past February on the Marionette label.

Although difficult to classify as a genre, this piece certainly shares the same aesthetic as the rest of Marionette's catalog. The violin, the instrument she is most associated with, and her voice form the core of this impressive soundscape, which is intricately modulated with field-recorded samples and other elements.

I learned that she was coming to Japan, and that she would be performing in Kurashiki, where I live!

I was actually bitter when I found out after the show that she was going to perform with miki yui and Kota Yamauchi at "Soto" in Kyoto, but to my surprise, I found out that she was going to perform in my neighborhood and made up my mind that I would definitely go see her.

The set lasted about 30 minutes, but time flew by. The style of the performance was to record a violin, his own voice, and a toy harp? The style of the performance was fresh, not only in the way he played with strings and fingers, but also by physically modulating the violin with a rubber band and clips.

The vocals are sometimes accompanied by some kind of phrase, perhaps a poem of her own composition (according to the interview, she has written poetry as well). I got goosebumps when I heard the sound image of these instruments and voices creating complex layers and new overtones.

I was lucky enough to talk with her as the venue was styled in such a way that the artists were also relaxing at the bar counter or on the sofas listening to other live performances or DJs. She is a very modest and gentle person. She told me that this was her first tour and that she got the impression that the Japanese audience was listening to her performance with a lot of concentration and respect for the artist. She herself seems to have interest in and respect for Japanese culture, and gave us a special business card that she prepared for this tour. I like the katakana characters on it). She seemed to like the sake, especially the muddy sake.

Her Japan tour has just started, so if you have a chance, please do not miss it. Next time is environment 0g in Osaka.
